Window Cleaning
How do you get clean windows?
Have you ever watched a professional window cleaner at work and thought: "That looks so easy!"
It will be easy for you too with the right tools.
Are you about to clean outdoor windows? Then read our 3 easy steps to streak-free clean windows. That guide focuses on outdoor window cleaning, but here we'll focus a bit on indoor window cleaning.
Streaks on freshly cleaned windows don't appear by themselves. Hot water, vertical scraping with a worn squeegee, lack of overlap, and slow cleaning; these guarantee streaks on your windows.
Fortunately, cleaning windows indoors is much simpler than outdoors. Sun, wind, and rain complicate outdoor cleaning, and more dirt accumulates on the pane, but you still want your windows to be perfectly clean indoors, otherwise, you're back to square one.
How do I best clean windows indoors?
You can clean your windows in two ways when it comes to interior windows and glass panels on, for example, doors and in the shower cubicle.
The most important factor for getting clean and nice windows when you clean them is to dissolve ALL the dirt on the pane. So, the method you use should depend on how dirty the window is.
Method 1 (for very dirty and greasy windows):
When the interior windows are dirty, you need to clean them with soapy water. You can advantageously follow the guide we link to at the top of this page.
A good, undamaged squeegee, a washer, a lint-free cloth or glass cloth, cold water, and a good window soap are the most important things you'll need. A proper washer will give the best result, but if you're not interested in buying one, you can also use a sponge or a soft brush to wash your windows.
Thoroughly soap the windows with the washer/sponge. The washer should not be too wet, or you'll get streaks everywhere. Wipe a vertical strip along one side of the window with your microfiber cloth. This will create an approximately 5 cm wide, dry edge where you should start with the squeegee before moving it horizontally across the window – one strip at a time.
Finally, wipe down the rubber seals on the frame to ensure all water is cleaned away.
Method 2 (quick general daily cleaning):
Here you only need 2 (maybe 3 things). Follow along here. You will need:
- Good sprayable glass cleaner
It can also be a mild solution of window cleaner and water that you've poured into a spray bottle. - A lint-free microfiber glass cloth
- Possibly a squeegee
The squeegee is optional and a matter of personal preference. You'll have to experiment to see what gives you the best results. For a very large pane, it may be easier to use a squeegee than a glass microfiber cloth for the entire pane.
Spray the glass cleaner onto the pane. Let it work for a short while. Then thoroughly wipe it off with the microfiber glass cloth in circular motions. Continue until there is no more glass cleaner to wipe off the window.
Myths about window cleaning
- Vinegar and spirits for windows that are sooty or stained by nicotine!
No! Neither is necessary. Cold water with a little window soap is enough. However, vinegar is good for binding limescale, so you don't end up with limescale stains on the pane.
- Newspaper makes windows shiny!
No! This dates back to when newspapers were printed with lead-based ink. Today, newspapers make more mess than they clean.
- Don't clean windows in sunshine!
Both yes and no! You can clean windows in all types of weather – as long as the water is cold and clean, and you are fast enough. If the water is too warm and the sun is shining, the water evaporates too quickly, and you won't get all the dirt off.
