Corded vacuum cleaner – complete guide to selection and purchase
A corded vacuum cleaner is still the cornerstone of many Danish homes – and for good reason. It provides constant power, high and stable suction, and is ideal for thorough weekly cleaning. At Fnugfri, we have over 25 years of experience with vacuum cleaners and will help you find the right model for your home and your needs.
What to consider before buying a corded vacuum cleaner
Motor and suction power: EU's ecodesign requirements set a maximum of 900 W. This may sound like a limitation, but the latest models are actually at least as efficient as the old ones – and significantly quieter. We recommend a minimum motor of 500 W. Models below that provide too little suction power, no matter how well equipped they are otherwise.
HEPA filter: As a minimum, you should demand a HEPA filter in your new vacuum cleaner. It keeps the dust inside the machine instead of blowing it back into the air – crucial for allergy sufferers and households with pets.
Bagged or bagless? A bagged vacuum cleaner is generally best for allergy sufferers, as the dust is kept sealed in the bag. It also typically has a larger capacity and needs to be emptied less often. A bagless vacuum cleaner is cheaper to run, and you can easily see when it needs emptying – but the suction power can decrease as the container fills up.
Working radius: The cord length is crucial for how freely you can move. The shorter the cord, the more often you will need to change power outlets. Combine with a long telescopic wand for maximum reach.
Home size and floors: If you live in an apartment, a compact and lightweight model is ideal. If you have a multi-story house, weight and ease of use are important factors, as you will need to carry it up and down stairs.
Price: A rule of thumb at Fnugfri: good vacuum cleaners for household use start from approximately DKK 1,200. You can certainly find cheaper models, but the quality difference is noticeable – and cleaning should not be more difficult than necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions about Corded Vacuum Cleaners (FAQ)
What is the maximum motor power of a vacuum cleaner today? According to EU ecodesign requirements, new vacuum cleaners may have a maximum motor size of 900 W. Manufacturers have adapted by optimizing airflow, and the latest models are at least as efficient as the old ones – and typically quieter.
Should I choose a bagged or bagless vacuum cleaner? If you have allergies or are particularly sensitive to dust, a bagged vacuum cleaner is recommended – the dust is kept sealed and you avoid contact when emptying. A bagless model is cheaper to operate and easier to see when it needs emptying, but the suction power can decrease as the container fills. Both types are available with HEPA filters.
What is a HEPA filter, and do I need one? A HEPA filter retains 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns – including dust mites, pollen, and pet hair. It is recommended for everyone but is particularly important for allergy sufferers. At Fnugfri, we always recommend vacuum cleaners with a HEPA filter as a minimum.
What is the difference between a household vacuum cleaner and a commercial vacuum cleaner? Household vacuum cleaners are designed for private use and are typically lighter and quieter. Commercial vacuum cleaners like the Nilfisk VP-series and Ghibli are built for intensive use, have larger capacity, more powerful motors, and longer lifespan. If you have special needs – e.g., a workshop, craftsmanship, or larger cleaning tasks – a commercial model can be a worthwhile investment.
What is a wet/dry vacuum cleaner? A wet/dry vacuum cleaner can suck up both dry dust and liquids – ideal for workshops, the garage, the basement, or in case of water damage. The Nilfisk Aero series and Ghibli Power WD are good examples of quality models in this category.
What is an ash vacuum cleaner? An ash vacuum cleaner is specially designed to suck ash from fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, and grills. It has a special filter intended for fine ash particles. The Ghibli AS27R and Cecotec Ash 1000 Lite are examples from our range.
How much should I pay for a good household vacuum cleaner? At Fnugfri, we recommend starting from approx. DKK 1,200 for a decent household vacuum cleaner. There is a big difference in quality and durability – a cheap vacuum cleaner quickly becomes an expensive affair if it does not meet the requirements. We carry models from Nilfisk, Bosch, AEG, Hoover, Electrolux, Numatic Henry, Max 1, and more.
